Into the Nanoverse: An Atomic View of a Battery
Acompanying the virtual reality exhibit Carbon Nanoverse at CARBON, Science Gallery Bengaluru, this talk with materials scientist Dr Jacob Martin, who is part of the two-person team behind the exhibit, gave an insight behind the science of it all.
Martin focused on the science behind the lithium-ion batteries that are revolutionising our transport and are set to transform our electrical grid. But how do they work at the atomic scale? The audience experienced the atomic structure of a battery using computer visualisations and 3D glasses! Alongside this atom eye view, Jacob discussed the materials science that led to the discovery of the battery, and his recent work on manufacturing battery grade graphite.
About the Scientist
Jacob Martin is a carbon materials scientist and nanotechnologist that studies how we can manufacture carbon for use in the development of renewable energy. He is a physicist, chemist and chemical engineer having completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2020. He then was a research fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology in Singapore working with industry to decarbonise. He is a Forrest Fellow in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Curtin University in Perth, Australia working on advanced carbon materials for decarbonisation with batteries and hydrogen.
