The Sounds Tapper

A microscope turned recording device that allows us to hear the micro-sounds of Bengaluru’s water. Just like a turntable needle that scans the grooves of a vinyl record, the needles of this modified microscope are in direct contact with the vibrating water membrane. It plays the sound of oscillating pulses generated by bacteriological and chemical reactions taking place in the water.

Water samples were from collected from the following lakes:

  • Bagalagunte lake

  • Rachenahalli lake

  • Thirumenahalli lake

  • Kogilu lake

  • Abbigere lake

  • Avalahalli lake

  • Ramagondanahalli lake

  • Hebbal lake

  • Kattigenahalli lake

  • Harohalli lake

About the Artist

In his search for the essence of auditory perception, Steven Tevels aims to develop a personal sonographic language; an individual means of ‘composing’. A search for newer presentations of ‘sound’ and the development of other media than the most conventional ‘loudspeaker’ that we have used for decades. Simply put, sound is an essential and logical component of his working resources. Sound is a primary, essential requirement of music. Sounds in which we can no longer discern pitch are called ‘noise’. What is perceived as music is determined by conventions.
