Ripe for Change: A Biodiverse Banana Tasting Event
In the recent past, numerous articles, reports, and papers have highlighted the alarming disappearance of bananas. Factors such as pests, infestations, lack of varieties, and the impact of climate change have all contributed to this concerning trend.
The event was a collaborative effort between Edible Issues and Science Gallery Bengaluru to unravel the complexities of the banana industry. Together, we delved into the rich diversity of bananas in India, exploring the varieties available in our local mandis. Our was to initiate a meaningful conversation about banana policies, markets, and the future of this beloved yellow fruit. Participants were encouraged to engage their senses fully, appreciating the diverse range of banana varieties, reflecting on personal memories associated with this fruit, and posing critical questions about how bananas will evolve in the future.
Edible Issues is a food systems collective fostering thought and conversation on the Indian food system through public participatory events, research projects, meetups, and more.
