MEDIATOR PROGRAMME
Mediators are integral to Science Gallery Bengaluru’s public engagement programme: our target audience of young adults not only visit and learn from, but also drive the experience of the exhibition. Mediators listen, provoke questions, tell stories, and guide visitor experiences through the exhibition season. Having trained with artists and researchers, mediators are uniquely positioned to captivate, intrigue, and enrapture their audience.
Mediator-led sessions also provide the opportunity for each visitor to bring their unique insight and experiences into a conversation sparked by the exhibits, events, and programmes.
Anchored by the Learning Team, during CARBON we piloted the full-time programme and expanded the part-time programme to widen the reach of our mentorship initiatives.
Full-time Mediator Programme
The CARBON full-time mediators spent 5 days a week at the gallery, for a period one year. As members of the larger SGB team, they anchored and supported other teams in creating experiences inside and outside the gallery. The programme not only trained young adults in the core skills required for mediating, but also focused on building other skills in writing, design thinking, and public engagement. The mediators interacted closely with the rest of the SGB team and collaborators, gaining insights into the creation, curation, and production of exhibitions at the interface of science and art. They also created and ran outreach programmes that extended the reach of SGB and the exhibition-season.

Part-time Mediator Programme
The part-time mediators for CARBON were young adults who came from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Most of them were university/colleges students pursuing their undergraduate and postgraduate coursework. There were a few working professionals in the team as well. They spent their weekends at SGB and worked with the full-time mediators in amplifying the public engagement commitment of the gallery. The programme was designed to focus on training the mediators to hone their skills in facilitation, communication, and critical and interdisciplinary thinking.

Feedback
Hear from two of our mediators about their experience from CARBON:
"My major takeaway from the programme was the experience of engaging in secondary research for the exhibition, particularly while working on the CARBON handbook. Exposure to research scholars from various disciplines during the training and workshops provided valuable insights into how they approach and engage with their practices. Additionally, my communication skills have significantly improved, allowing me to more effectively convey complex ideas and foster meaningful dialogues."
"The mediator programme is a unique opportunity to work in public engagement with science. It is a space to learn outside an academic institution, meet a lot of interesting people, and become a better communicator."
