River Landscapes
As a part of the River Landscapes: A New Glossary project, Science Gallery Bengaluru hosted a transdisciplinary workshop on fluvial landscapes, with particular attention to the story of the river Kaveri. The workshop was held at Science Gallery Bengaluru premises between 10 and 14 February 2025 and saw participation from students, early career researchers and community practitioners from diverse disciplines and walks of life.
The output from the workshop was displayed at Science Gallery Bengaluru on 9 March 2025. A glossary of terms related to fluvial landscapes is currently in production and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
River Landscapes is funded and supported by Pro Helvetia.
About the Workshop
The River Landscapes workshop attempted to engage young adults in the story of the river Kaveri and to encourage deep and critical thinking about our relationship with river landscapes at large. With Bengaluru being the site of the workshop, it felt pertinent to draw specific attention to the Kaveri River which not only supplies much of the city’s water, but has a profound influence on the local landscape.
Through the workshop, participants were encouraged to situate historical and contemporary realities of Kaveri in the larger political, technocratic and socio-cultural imagination of river landscapes. Through the course of the workshop, they worked towards creating new conceptions and representations of fluvial landscapes, informed by the presentations, lectures and discussions with facilitators. Their submissions will now be used to inform and complement a glossary on river landscapes.
