Jungle Ghadi

A clock without hands

We look at the blooming flowers or shedding of leaves to sense time, but turn to clocks and calendars to mark it. Can there be a Jungle Ghadi; a clock marked by wilderness, customised to each person’s surroundings and what can it tell us? Heat is a series of ten optical slides that is a part of a larger ongoing project called Jungle Ghadi, in which Sanyukta Sharma designs a calendar of the environment around her.

The original slides are made with plant material sandwiched between transparent sheets. These can be projected, magnified with backlight, scanned for prints or digital screens. Jungle Ghadi has been an ongoing project since 2014 and has been shown at Khoj Gallery, Delhi, Conflicting Spaces in Howrah, West Bengal and Malmo, Sweden. It is a simple device that aims to inspire people to mark a seasonal time that is personal and local.

Medium: Optical slides

Year: 2014 - present
