How Pandemics Advance Science

By Gagandeep Kang | 12 April 2021

There’s no single solution to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2, but the rapid development and rollout of vaccines that can protect communities is crucial. Gagandeep Kang, a physician and scientist at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, has worked extensively on vaccine research and development. She reflects on key research questions around the human immune response which could potentially shape more efficient and targeted responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the Expert

Gagandeep Kang is a Professor of Microbiology at Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory, and the Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore.

She and her conduct inter-disciplinary research on enteric infections and child health. They work on gut infections in children, nutrition, water and sanitation. Their team does everything from geographic information systems to human immunology. They have evaluated vaccines in pre-clinical and clinical phase 1-3 studies for rotavirus and cholera, and are now working on typhoid and SARS-CoV2.

Here are the top three questions on Gagandeep Kang’s mind at this moment:

  • What are the physical determinants of the risk of infection?

  • Can we measure the infection history of a person and see whether that modifies their response to SARS COV-2?

  • Do we know which kind of antibody or cell-mediated immune response really protects us from infection?
