Invitation for Expression of Interest for Architectural Design

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST from Architectural Firms for providing Conceptual Design for Science Gallery Bengaluru.

The Board of Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) invites Expression of Interest (EOI) from qualified Architects/ Architectural firms/Design-led teams having a functional office in Bengaluru, for the development of indicative Master Plan and conceptual design for the building of the new Science Gallery Bengaluru, an exciting and prestigious project to engage the city and its citizens with science and art.

Ultimately the conceptual design should reflect the following principles:

  • The Science Gallery core values of Connect, Participate, Surprise

  • High connectivity between the functional spaces and a flexible design with well resolved and contiguous spaces

  • Universal Design - providing both conceptual and physical accessibility

  • The envelope of the building and its immediate environs should reflect the notion of a porous membrane enabling interface with the city

  • An exciting scheme that is deliverable, highly sustainable and embodying the best elements of science, engineering and technology in its design

  • Maximum use of the development potential of the site

The built up area of the project is expected to be an estimated 25,000 - 27,000 sqft. It will be located on a 1.6 acre greenfield site adjacent to a main link road in North Bangalore. The initial Feasibility Study estimates an average of 545,000 visitors annually, averaging 5650 per week, or 375 visitors per hour. Furthermore, it estimates the CapEx in the region of 170 MN Rupees. Subject to the quality and content of information received from respondents for this EOI, a short list of respondents will be established (maximum of five) and these respondents will be requested to develop an architectural conceptual design for Science Gallery Bengaluru.  An honorarium of Rs. one lahk will be paid to each of the five shortlisted respondents for providing concept designs. 

The Board of Science Gallery Bengaluru does not guarantee to proceed further than the EOI, this invitation for EOI being neither an agreement nor an offer for award of work.  



  1. Having at 10 years professional experience

  2. Having a Head Office in India, ideally with local offices in Bengaluru

  3. Having completed at least 2 (two) nos. similar works of space for public use with a single project of value not less than 10 Crores (each) in last 5 years for Govt./ Semi Govt./ Corporate houses/ Education / Cultural

  4. Must be registered with the Council of Architecture of India

  5. The Respondent is deemed to have read and considered the EOI in its entirety prior to submitting its proposal.

  • Request for Expression of Interest for Concept Designs advertised: from June 16th 2016.

  • A Pre-Conference for eligible and interested parties was held on Weds June 22nd between 3pm - 4pm at Karnataka Science & Technology Promotion Society, # 24/2, 3rd Floor, 21st Main Road, Banashankari 2nd Stage, Bangalore- 560070. An FAQ of the common queries from this session will be published via this website shortly.

  • Deadline for Submission of complete Expression of Interest: 4.30pm IST July 29th 2016 

  • Five Architects / Firms/ Design-led teams will be contacted to present their approach to the brief to the SGB Board & Selection Panel in Bengaluru in the second week of September 2016. 

  • Selection and Appointment of Architect/ Firm/ Design-led team by end of September 2016. 

  • The following elements will need to be undertaken and delivered by the selected Architect by end of November 2016:

    1. Indicative Master Plan including the Phase 1 proposed site and future phased development on the additional site based on the Brief.

    2. Full Concept Design Plan for Science Gallery Bengaluru including: Site location plan, Floor plans, structural, MEP and landscape coordinated, Sections, Elevations

    3. Schedule of Building Works including: procurement, decanting, construction, commissioning periods and occupation date.

    4. Cost Model and Fee Breakdown for full works



  • EOI with all enclosures in pdf must be submitted only via email only to, with the subject line ‘EOI for ARCHITECT FIRMS FOR SCIENCE GALLERY BENGALURU’, on or before 4.30p.m. IST on July 29th 2016

  • Late submissions or those which do not correspond to the detailed requirements in the EOI document will be summarily rejected.

  • SGB reserves the right to carry out clarification interviews with a shortlist of consultants as necessary.
